To war, but let's keep our civility, shall we?

Manners, Ladies and Gentlemen

Transcript.. from Jaeger Edelweiss to myself, Colonel O'Toole.

[17:03] Jaeger Edelweiss: we were met by some quite rude caledonians earlier - I'm sure you have heard
[17:05] Hotspur Otoole: I have not.
[17:05] Hotspur Otoole: I just came in.
[17:05] Hotspur Otoole: what happened?
[17:05] Jaeger Edelweiss: it was quite ugly
[17:06] Hotspur Otoole: How so?
[17:06] Jaeger Edelweiss: Our visit to Caledon was treated as an agressive act, and weapons were drawn on us
[17:07] Hotspur Otoole: Oh dear... war fever.
[17:07] Hotspur Otoole: that is unfortunate.
[17:07] Hotspur Otoole: may I ask, as it is no secret, who the Caledonians were?
[17:07] Jaeger Edelweiss: Insults were passed naturally, but it was unpleasant that many did not understand the roleplay
[17:22] Jaeger Edelweiss: Ranulph Graves, Lapin Paris, Lavendar Beaumont, Newbe Writer, Nux Chaplin, Erasmus Margulis, Puck Goodliffe, Darkle Sands, Roy Smashcan, Angus Mesmer, ZenMondo Wormser, Hope Dreier
[17:23] Hotspur Otoole: Aha, I have Mr. Goodliffe here in front of me...
[17:24] Jaeger Edelweiss: Well, I am sure the Caledon version of events differs from ours.
[17:25] Hotspur Otoole: Mr. Goodliffe states: only one man drew a weapon, and he does not represent all fo Caledon. I (Puck) had out a shotgun already, before they showed up. But I didnt threaten them.
[17:26] Jaeger Edelweiss: I have informed your Colonel of our dissapointment
[17:26] Hotspur Otoole: Lapin Paris?
[17:26] Jaeger Edelweiss: Exrex
[17:27] Hotspur Otoole: Ah.. what did old Ex do?
[17:27] Jaeger Edelweiss: He planted the flags that brought about our visit
[17:27] Hotspur Otoole: Ah, that would be like him. What's the harm in that?
[17:28] Hotspur Otoole: well, that part, at least, is part of the fun
[17:28] Jaeger Edelweiss: The tit for tat way in which this whole scenario has gone has made a mockery of the entire role play
[17:28] Hotspur Otoole: I apologize that our lads (and lasses) would not allow a return of the favor on your part.
[17:28] Hotspur Otoole: Personally, I have had fun with it, without being disparaging.
[17:29] Jaeger Edelweiss: You, Major Hotspur, do not need to appologise on behalf of your people
[17:30] Hotspur Otoole: Well, I've been jingoistic with the best of them, I just think it's regrettable that some of us are taking it FAR, FAR too seriously.
[17:31] Jaeger Edelweiss: I take it seriously
[17:32] Hotspur Otoole: inasmuch as the GOAL of this gambado is to generate funds for cancer, I do too.
[17:32] Hotspur Otoole: and I have been rather serious about acting sportsmanlike.
[17:33] Hotspur Otoole: but the fun bit, the saber rattleing, chest-puffery, secret missions to plant flags.
[17:33] Hotspur Otoole: in my mind, that's far better than the battle.
[17:33] Hotspur Otoole: I would hope my compatriots could conduct themselves accordingly.
[17:34] Hotspur Otoole: I have reminded them that after the war is over, we will be friends with NeuAltenberg again, so let's not spoil that with aggressive behavior.
[17:35] Jaeger Edelweiss: It is difficult to imagine that we could be friends with Caledon again with the way many are acting
[17:35] Hotspur Otoole: i'm sorry you feel that way, Jaeger.
[17:36] Hotspur Otoole: this is not a real war... this is rhetoric.
[17:37] Jaeger Edelweiss: I feel as you do, after this war we were meant to become allies, but the insults today were beyond clever banter
[17:37] Hotspur Otoole: Were they personal?
[17:38] Jaeger Edelweiss: Calling us Krauts for one thing
[17:38] Jaeger Edelweiss: that's a racial slur
[17:38] Jaeger Edelweiss: and ugly racial slur
[17:39] Hotspur Otoole: drat...
[17:39] Hotspur Otoole: well, the best I can do at this stage is remind people of their manners... which I am doing at this very moment, in another channel.
[17:39] Jaeger Edelweiss: It doesn't seem to matter because not everyone in Caledon is of such a level head
[17:40] Jaeger Edelweiss: I know we have a couple of loose cannons here
[17:40] Hotspur Otoole: Some folks are being aggressive and not getting into the spirit of things.
[17:41] Jaeger Edelweiss: Yes, which spoils the whole thing
[17:41] Jaeger Edelweiss: I'm sure the Cancer patients would not approve
[17:43] Hotspur Otoole: As I just pointed out.
[17:44] Jaeger Edelweiss: Anyway.. this has dragged on too long, I'm off to enjoy the holiday outside
[17:44] Hotspur Otoole: Have fun sir!

Now, are we being over aggressive, or are they being a bit too sensitive? It really doesn't matter. I have read the transcript of the event the Jaeger is describing, and it really doesn't matter who said what or what the specifics are (as a side point, I shan't be posting the transcript of the Victoria City incident, it does not bear repeating). Both sides don't come off well in the exchange. If we don't regulate our behavior, and allow both sides to do the saber rattling, and treat each other with respect and dignity, there will be long term damage to relations between Caledon and NeuAltenberg. To be serious, this isn't a real war, it's rhtetoric, as I said. REMEMBER, we are in a noble cause, here, fighting cancer! Can we not forget that?

How can one roleplay war without roleplaying anger and hatred? That's the point of war. We might as well just have a Beltane celebration if they want people to get along.

I apologise for anything anyone took to heart but I am roleplaying what seems to be emnity between two seperate nations - how can I roleplay being nice, sweet Puck?

To me, it makes no sense in the context of a war, real OR roleplayed, to be nice.

I've read the transcript. At no point is the word "Kraut" mentioned.

This is the second time Jaeger has taken offense at something that wasn't said.

I think it's time for a reading test.

Well - good friends - perception is reality.

I thank you for your validation, Mr Pearse, that our citizens did not use the term Kraut - at least in the open channel. As one who has traveled to their land for some good-natured adventures as part of the role play, it is disappointing that t has come to this.

It is most unfortunate that what was perceived by some of us as good fun in the name of a most worthy cause has caused offense, anger, and hurt.

I thank you, Mr O'Toole, for your efforts on behalf of Caledon. As the diplomacy continues, please let Loch Avie know if she may play a role. I am most anxious to have resolution to this...and have our relationship restored...and to return the focus to cancer research and treatment.

I think somebody (from over the briny) needs to stay on his meds. "Oversensitive" is right. I realize I've been stuck in RL far more than I'd like lately, but I've yet to hear of anything transpiring that rates more than a chuckle. Personally, I love the creative "chest-pounding" and period banter. As a veteran of RL military re-enacting, I'm surprised by the hair-trigger umbrage of the Teutonic gentleman in question. The 1st Life "Huns" I've had the pleasure to lob blanks at have been far less sensitive. Hurling insults is cheaper than rounds, and less painful than a potato masher in the noggin.
