Having a bit of leave time to burn at the end of the year, my human finds himself at home this week, and blogging more often than he ought. I found myself in world at a very unusual time for me, during daylight EST. So I found myself in a perfect position to witness the Guv being interviewed at Dr. Dobb's Island by Mitch Wagner from InfoWeek - (Avie Ziggy Figaro) that's Mitch, pictured, at right. I am never on during the day; it was a revelation of sorts. The interview was a high point but many of the folk I traditionally associate with were not in world and wouldn't be for quite some time, so I logged off after a while. The interview was marred somewhat by "Ziggy" being almost inaudible during the entire course of the conversation. I heard Desmond's responses to Ziggy, however, and could easily pick up (most of the time) what was being asked. I can say without fear of contradiction, and to squash any rumors that may be near and dear to anyone, that DESMOND SHANG IS NOT A FEMALE. During the conversation Desmond's obviously male voice admitted he occasionally had griefer tendencies, may or may not use an alt, and would not admit to being Shango the Sailor, a particularly infamous male escort I have met in world.

The interview was something of a softball-- I know the Guv doesn't court controversy, so it will be good publicity at least.
I briefly came back in in the afternoon, and visited Aley Arai's wonderful Privateer Space build.. a magnificent accomplishment. My (slightly fictionalized) travelogue is HERE. Some say Aley is Arcadia Asylum reborn.. I met the lady and she didn't strike me as being the same person, but I didn't have much to go by.
Came back in later in the evening, and royally got the smack down from Mssr. Scaggs and his Mrs. Scaggs. The cards were not with me. Thankfully, the Steelhead meeting beckoned-- for once, I was early! Even though I don't own land there, I like to attend the weekly meetings and consider myself a citizen, in spirit, if not economically. Which is why I was surprised and saddened to hear one member express views about not encouraging relations with another sim, on the basis of that sim's commonly held religious beliefs, and another laugh it off with a joke at another religion's expense. I know there were members of both religions present in attendance, and they clearly heard those statements. I found myself leaving early lest I say anything I would regret.
Bumped into Somme on the way back to Upstairs, and attempted to fence some more but was astonished to find all my cards in the HUD gone blank. The designer of En Garde-- Rifkin Hapsburg, dropped by and said he would wrench on the code a bit-- but no promises. I ended the evening with another visit to Privateer Space sim to show it off to Frequency Picnic and Eva Bellambi. We had voice on, which I rarely do, but it was a great benefit poking around in various places aboard the spaceship. After a spectacular crash, thus to bed!

I didn't make a joke about the entire religion, but that one section of the religion. The one section that openly attack those that don't worship the way that they do (I was one of those people they've surrounded and yelled at and threw a Bible at me). The one section at their once a year convention, stated that they were going to convert those of the Jewish Faith to Christianity because the Jewish don't believe in Jesus Christ. And let's not forget their gay bashing.
There were members of that religion present at the meeting, but there were none of that section. And I made sure those of that faith knew who I was talking about, at least that made it known they were of the faith.
That section has done nothing to really earn my respect, not if they're being disrespectful to other faiths, and I'm afraid I do not regret the joke I made at their expense. I'm sorry if you feel differently
Fuzz, what you are describing are the acts of intolerant individuals-- you dont' make a great case for your own open-mindedness by condemning an entire religion out of hand. YOUR WORDS were aimed at "Southern Baptists"-- not at a specific intolerant group therein. We all have the transcript, and I just read it agin. It wasn't funny, it singled out a distinct group, and it was in poor taste. As an official of Steelhead City, you might wish to choose your targets more wisely.
I'm not a member of either of the groups slagged in that meeting, but I am a Christian ,and I didn't like where that discussion was going. Who gets excluded next?
I have been in many places in the world, and have seen many abhorent things done in the name of religion-- but I don't consider them "doctrinal", rather the acts of people using religion as a crutch for heinous activity. Like your example of being surrounded by hectoring proslytizers, for example.
I don't play in SL for more RL doodoo. Sorry, life's too short. Perhaps we're splitting hairs about who is who and what is what and to what degree... but I don't don't think it has a place in Second Life.
Since I was the one who said "No" in the first place, before being drowned in a chorus of "they don't have antennas", you might want to reread my comments on the transcript again before getting yourself on a moral high horse.
I said that "religious outposts" were a bad idea.
Yes the group first mentioned was Mormons. So what? I was making a statement that we should not be having embassies from from any religious group. Precisely because some people get awfully offended and not everyone believes in the same gods.
If a religious organisation sets up a sim of their own and you want to visit, be my guest. I don't want to have Mormons, Jesuits, Hare Krishnas or any other religious group setting up shop in Steelhead.
Religion gets people flying off the handle before looking at what was actually said. As you've admirably demonstrated.
Of course, Ed, it's always the other chap's fault when you say something derogatory about his nation, or religion, or some other sweeping statement. Never anything you did. Fair enough!
I'm taking a break from this subject, it's closed here.
H.
Subject's closed, Ed. I'm not asking you, I'm telling you. Peddle it elsewhere.
