The Lady and the Lighthouse-- Simulating an Explosion in Second Life

It is not for I, a non-resident, to publically comment on recent events in the city of New Babbage. There has been enough airing of dirty laundry as it is, and more than one person has been hurt as a result of decisions made, things said, and reaction and over-reaction to them. Rehashing this ugliness is not the intent of this post-- if you are interested, they are publically archived. Rather, I was astonished to see this amazing image on the New Babbage NING recently:

Ignoring, for a moment, the reasons behind the lighthouse coming down, I'm just astonished that buildings can do this in Second Life.

How does one "Explode" a structure in world?

I find this fascinating from a technical view, tragic from the viewpoint of interpersonal relations. Perhaps the pieces are manipulated, stop motion style, to achieve the simulation of an explosion, but I can't see anyone bothering to do this...

This is actually easier to accomplish than one may think: simply set all the prims to "physical", de-link them, and stand back!

Not terribly good for the physics engine (or at least, the old physics engine), but a spectacular effect nonetheless.

Boyarin, once again you demonstrate your good sense and technical acumen. I have often wanted to film just this effect. You've just given me the way!

Yrs.

I actually have a script that you can put into prims to set their positions before the 'crash' - then, after they do come crashing down, simply speak a command and zoom - everything returns to it's original position so you can knock it down again.,

I wish I could remember the name of the creator and name of the script, but I'm not in-world right now LOL

Hotspur,

You were absent from the festivities when Frau Tensai blew up the saloon. I have pictures I can show you, and she can tell you the details of her ordnance. More complex than the Boyarina's method, but also more controlled in an urban circumstance.
